About The Beach

Hello there!

My name is Aly Beach and I am a fourth-year Communication and Digital Media bridge student at Ontario Tech University. I started my post-secondary adventures at Durham College in the Journalism program.

I wear many hats. I have worked as a freelance writer, a journalist, a web content editor/creator, a web developer, a clerk and a freelance web accessibility specialist. I currently intern at Durham Deaf Services as a communications and marketing assistant. Writing, storytelling and accessibility are my passions biggest passions.

I enjoy the rush of finding a good story, speaking to new people, fitting pieces of the full article together, connecting the dots and following leads through to completion. I love to share stories about the community and give a voice to those who otherwise may not be heard. These two passions combined have turned me into a hardcore accessibility advocate. I truly believe the world should be accessible for people of all abilities and I will work however I am able to remove barriers of access for people with disabilities.

During my time at Durham College, I won several awards for my hard work. I won best first-year commentary and best photo in my first year and best opinion piece and editorial in my second year. You can read some my journalism work on my portfolio. At OTU I have made the Dean’s List every semester thus far. I worked very hard for these awards and I am super proud of everything I have accomplished, given that I used to think I could never achieve academic or professional success the way that I have.

In my spare time, I enjoy cooking, video games (namely the Borderlands series), knitting, netflix, aesthetics and making bad jokes. Despite the fact that I am hard of hearing, I also really enjoy music. I always prefer to be listening to something, specifically anything that could fall under the “Punk” genre umbrella.

When reading my reviews, it could be important to note that I view the world through the eyes of a non-hetero woman with a disability with a passion for journalistic integrity. This perspective will sometimes show through in my opinion writing and reviews.
